A coordinated operation involving the Nigerian Army, the Department of State Services (DSS), and local volunteer groups has successfully thwarted a large-scale bandit attack on communities in Shiroro, security sources confirmed on Tuesday.
The attempted assault targeted Bagna and Erena villages, where residents say the intervention prevented what could have been a devastating attack.
According to intelligence reports quoted by security analyst, Zagagola Magama on Wednesday, heavily armed bandits were mobilising for a coordinated strike on the communities.
It was gathered that more than 300 armed attackers, reportedly travelling on motorcycles, advanced toward the villages before encountering a well-planned ambush by security operatives and local vigilantes.
The joint forces, acting on intelligence reports engaged the group, killing several of the assailants and forcing others to flee toward the Makuba and Allawa axis.
A military source said that security operatives and local volunteers had credible intelligence on their movements and laid an ambush.
Residents of Bagna and Erena expressed relief and gratitude following the operation, praising the swift response and coordination of the security forces.
“We are very happy. We thank the joint security forces for protecting us,” one resident said, reflecting the community’s sentiment after the incident.

The operation highlights growing collaboration between formal security agencies and community-based volunteer groups.
This partnership, they say, is helping to close critical security gaps, particularly in rural and vulnerable areas.
“The synergy between the military, intelligence services, and local defenders is strengthening frontline security.
“It is becoming an effective model for countering insurgent and bandit threats across affected regions,” a source added.
The incident marks another step in ongoing efforts to improve security in parts of Niger State, which has faced persistent threats from armed groups in recent years.
