Parents Demand Justice After Toddler’s Death At Rivers School

The parents of a two-year-old girl have called for justice following the tragic death of their daughter in an incident at her school in Rivers State.

The child’s father, Dr. Akekwe Yasua-gamene, told journalists on Thursday that the incident occurred on March 17 at Wisdom Gate International School in Eligbolo, where his daughter, Winnie, had gone for the day.

According to him, the family was informed that the child had been asleep in the classroom when a bookshelf suddenly collapsed on her.

He added that a verbal report from a pathologist who conducted an autopsy indicated that the toddler suffered a fractured skull.

Dr. Yasua-gamene further alleged that the school only contacted the family after taking the child to two hospitals. One of the facilities, the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, reportedly confirmed that she was brought in dead.

He also accused the school of tampering with the scene shortly after the incident, claiming that the area was cleaned and the bookshelf moved before any formal investigation could take place.

In addition, he alleged that certain individuals attempted to pressure and intimidate him and his wife into quickly burying their daughter and settling the matter.

The child’s mother, Chinyere Akekwe, said she received conflicting information about the incident.

She claimed that when she was initially contacted by a teacher, she was led to believe that her daughter was still alive.

The grieving mother said the loss has left the entire family devastated, including their three other children, as they continue to seek clarity and accountability over the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The incident has since sparked concern among residents, with calls for a thorough investigation to determine what led to the fatal accident and whether negligence played a role.
