Labour Party Disowns Viral Posts Inviting Obi, Kwankwaso Back

The Labour Party has distanced itself from viral social media posts calling on its former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the leader of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, to return to its fold, describing the messages as fraudulent and unauthorised.

The party’s reaction follows the circulation of posts on X from an account bearing its name and logo, urging both politicians to abandon the African Democratic Congress (ADC) amid ongoing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.

One of the widely shared messages read, “Dear @PeterObi @KwankwasoRM, our doors are open,” fueling speculation about possible defections.

However, the party leadership under Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, swiftly disowned the posts, insisting they did not originate from its national secretariat.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday, the chairman’s Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Ken Asogwa, urged the public to disregard information from the accounts, describing them as deceptive and misleading.

“The general public is strongly advised to disregard any information originating from the aforementioned fraudulent accounts.

Such statements are entirely unauthorised and do not reflect the position of the Labour Party,” he said.

Asogwa explained that the accounts in question had previously been disowned by the party, but were later altered by their operators to continue spreading misinformation.

He further clarified that the party is not currently operating any active social media platforms, noting that its official accounts—Labour Party-Nig on Facebook and LabourPartyNG on X—have remained dormant since the internal crisis that led to the removal of former National Chairman, Julius Abure, and the dissolution of the National Working Committee.

The party disclosed that it has petitioned the police to recover its official X account from individuals linked to the former leadership, adding that investigations are ongoing at the Force Intelligence Department.

According to the statement, those involved, including Abure and Umar Farouk, are cooperating with police authorities.

The party reiterated that all official communication would continue to be issued through authorised press statements from the office of the interim chairman, pending the resolution of the matter.

The development comes amid heightened political manoeuvring, with opposition figures exploring alliances and party platforms ahead of the next electoral cycle.
