Labour Party Rolls Out Election Calendar, Presidential Primary Slated For April 28

The Labour Party has announced Tuesday, April 28, 2026, as the date for its presidential primary. The schedule was disclosed to journalists on Friday, April 3, 2026, in Abuja through a letter signed by the party’s Interim National Chairman, Sen. Nenadi Usman, and submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Under the timetable, ward congresses will be held on Thursday, April 23, followed by Local Government Area (LGA) congresses on Friday, April 24, and state congresses on Saturday, April 25.

The staggered schedule aims to ensure orderly and wide participation of party members across all levels.

Sen. Usman explained that the notification to INEC is in line with Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022 (as amended), INEC’s guidelines for political parties, and Sections 223(1) and (2) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which require political parties to formally communicate the dates of their congresses and conventions.

She added that the party had earlier postponed its congresses to allow broader member participation and to complete the ongoing digital membership registration process.

“The party has now approved a revised timetable for its elective congresses and national convention,” Sen. Usman stated.

The national convention will take place on Tuesday, April 28, at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, Abia State.

The interim chairman urged INEC to ensure its state offices are properly informed to facilitate smooth monitoring of all congresses and the convention, in line with its statutory mandate.

Sen. Usman reaffirmed the Labour Party’s commitment to promoting democratic governance in Nigeria, noting that the structured schedule is intended to enhance transparency, inclusivity, and active engagement of party members.
