Tinubu Names Babalola Power Adviser, Orders Sector Reset Task Force

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed former Minister of Power, Rilwan Lanre Babalola, as Special Adviser on Power and Chairman of a newly established Presidential Task Force on Power Sector Reset and Restoration.

The appointment was announced on Thursday, April 30, 2026, in a statement by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga.

According to the presidency, the move is part of broader reforms aimed at restructuring the electricity sector to improve efficiency, accountability, and commercial sustainability.

As part of the changes, the Office of the Special Adviser on Energy has been redesignated as Special Adviser (Oil and Gas) to streamline roles and remove duplication within the energy governance framework.

Babalola, a former Minister of Power, was described as bringing strong sector experience and deep understanding of challenges across the electricity value chain.

The Presidential Task Force will operate under direct presidential supervision as a delivery-focused body tasked with restoring discipline and improving sector performance.

Its mandate includes a full reset of the electricity industry, implementation of a “performance before expansion” approach, and reduction of technical, commercial, and collection losses.

It is also expected to improve revenue assurance and liquidity, restore grid stability, strengthen tariff discipline, and boost investor confidence.

Other priorities include developing Electricity Growth Zones, reducing fiscal exposure, and producing a 90-day implementation plan for immediate reforms.

The presidency said the initiative aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, with expectations of faster execution and measurable improvement in power supply and sector performance.
