Doris Fisher, co-founder of Gap Inc. and a key architect of modern casual fashion, died Saturday, May 2, 2026, in San Francisco at the age of 94, the company confirmed.
She founded the business in 1969 with her husband, Donald Fisher, opening a single store that sold Levi’s jeans and music records.
Built on the idea of simplifying how customers shop for denim, the concept quickly gained traction.
Fisher is credited with naming “Gap,” a reference to the generation gap between young people and their parents, a theme that defined the brand’s early identity.

The company grew into a global retail group with thousands of stores and multiple brands, including Old Navy and Banana Republic.
While her husband led expansion, Fisher shaped the company’s merchandising and style, guiding its clean, accessible look.
She remained involved as a consultant until 2003 and served on the board until 2009.
Beyond retail, she co-founded the Gap Foundation and was a notable patron of contemporary art and education initiatives.
She is survived by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, leaving a lasting imprint on global fashion and retail.
