NYSC DG Urges Corps Members To Cut Excess, Prioritise Savings

The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, has called on corps members nationwide to adopt modest lifestyles and prioritise long-term financial security over unnecessary luxury.

Nafiu delivered the message during a visit to corps members at the NYSC Kaduna State Temporary Orientation Camp in Kurmi-Mashi, Kaduna.

The advice was contained in a statement posted on the scheme’s official X account on Wednesday.

Addressing the participants, the NYSC boss stressed the importance of responsible living, urging them to embrace a savings culture and avoid spending beyond their means.

He also encouraged active participation in the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme, describing it as a platform designed to equip young Nigerians with practical, income-generating skills.

“Don’t waste your time because time is precious. Do something with your time. Be diligent during your post-camp SAED training,” he told the corps members.

According to Nafiu, the initiative has the potential not only to foster self-reliance but also to enable participants to create job opportunities for others in the future.

He further revealed that the scheme had secured partnerships with various stakeholders to provide corps members with access to low-interest loans, grants, and starter packs to support small business ventures.

He advised them “to start small and gradually grow their business investments with time.”

During the visit, the Kaduna State NYSC Coordinator, Mrs Efeke Dadaza, presented a situation report on the camp’s activities.

She disclosed that 2,896 corps members had been registered, comprising 2,198 posted directly to Kaduna State and 698 redeployed from the Federal Capital Territory.

Dadaza added that the corps members had settled into camp life and were actively engaged in orientation programmes.
