What Octogenarians Must Do To Enjoy Longer Life Beyond 90 Years — Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has extended congratulations to the Asiwaju Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States, Alhaji Olatunde Badmus, on his 80th birthday, while also sharing lifestyle advice aimed at promoting longevity among octogenarians.

Obasanjo delivered the remarks on Saturday in Osogbo, Osun State, during a book launch held in honour of Badmus’ milestone birthday. He was represented at the event by Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, who read his speech on his behalf.

In his message, the former president praised Badmus for his achievements in business and other areas of life, noting his strong leadership record and commitment to faith.

He also used the opportunity to advise the celebrant and others in the same age bracket on habits believed to support longer life.

“By every standard, you are successful in all your endeavours. Your leadership roles in all the businesses you undertook are impressive. In business and outside business, you always make God your partner.

“At the age of 80, let me welcome you to this club. Let me read the rules of the club to you. Number one, your father and mother must not be alive, you must sleep for eight hours every day, you must undertake one hour of daily exercise like walking, and you must eat only twice a day.

“With obedience to these rules, your admission is registered and your longevity beyond 90 years is assured,” he said.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, in his remarks, described Badmus, who chairs Tuns Farms Limited, as a prominent figure whose influence spans local, national, and international spheres, with notable contributions across different sectors.

Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, also spoke at the event, commending Badmus for his steadfastness in faith and success in business. He reflected on their long-standing relationship and highlighted the celebrant’s consistency in balancing religion and enterprise.

Dangote further used the occasion to encourage younger Nigerians, especially aspiring entrepreneurs, to draw inspiration from Badmus’ life and values. He announced a donation of N100m toward the launch of the commemorative book.

“The celebrant has been a great man who has held on to his religion. He is a very religious person and also an astute businessman. We have been together for a very long time, since I was also a young man hustling to make money.

“But he has been able to maintain his business and his religion, so I admire and respect him. This made me leave Lagos. I drove for four hours and I am driving four hours back. May God give him long life and continued blessings.”

He also urged Nigerians to prioritise unity and collective responsibility in nation-building, stressing that progress depends on both citizens and leaders working together.

“All of us collectively must always pray for our leaders to make sure they succeed. Once they do, it will be better for all of us,” he said.

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, offered prayers for the celebrant and urged Nigerians to emulate Badmus’ patriotism and dedication to societal development.

As part of activities marking the celebration, the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, also commissioned a mosque constructed by Badmus in Osogbo, Osun State.
