The government of Togo has announced a major shift in its immigration policy, granting visa-free entry to citizens of all African countries travelling into the country for short visits.
The policy, unveiled on Tuesday, May 19, was contained in a statement issued by the country’s Ministry of Security through its official X handle.
Under the new arrangement, African travellers holding valid national passports will be allowed to enter Togo without a visa for stays of up to 30 days.
The government said the decision is aimed at strengthening continental integration and improving movement across African borders.
“Togo takes a historic step in strengthening African integration. Henceforth, all nationals of African states holding a valid national passport may enter Togolese territory without a visa, for a stay of up to 30 days.

“Through this major reform, the President of the Council reaffirms his commitment to making Togo a space of openness, mobility, opportunities, and cooperation at the heart of the African continent,” the statement read.
However, authorities clarified that travellers must still complete an online travel declaration at least 24 hours before arrival to obtain a travel clearance slip.
The ministry said the policy reflects Togo’s broader commitment to regional cooperation and easing cross-border movement within Africa.
With the announcement, Togo joins a growing list of African countries relaxing entry requirements to encourage tourism, trade, and diplomatic ties across the continent.
Rwanda has recently adopted a similar visa-free entry policy for African travellers.
In a related development, the Nigerian government has also begun implementing a 30-day visa exemption for Rwandan nationals visiting the country.
