Lagos Bans Goods On Public Buses, Defaulters Face Sack, Blacklist

The Lagos State Government has banned the carriage of goods and heavy luggage on all regulated public transport buses across the state, with enforcement set to begin on June 1, 2026.

The directive was announced on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, by the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).

LAMATA said the move is aimed at improving passenger safety, comfort, and service efficiency, citing growing disruption caused by the use of buses for transporting goods.

The agency said the decision followed consultations with bus operators, who agreed on the need to halt the practice and streamline operations.

It warned that drivers who violate the rule after enforcement begins will be dismissed and blacklisted, while any staff aiding the practice will face immediate dismissal.

LAMATA urged commuters and operators to comply and make alternative arrangements for goods transport, reaffirming its commitment to a safer and more efficient transport system.
