Former Zamfara State Deputy Governor, Mahdi Aliyu-Gusau, has won the governorship ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 general elections after emerging winner of the party’s primary held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, in Gusau.
Announcing the result, the Chairman of the ADC Governorship Primary Election Committee, Namadi Musa, said Aliyu-Gusau polled 35,665 votes to defeat two other aspirants.
Abdul’mutallab Ahmed-Mohammed came second with 15,922 votes, while Shehu Ahmed Musa scored 7,642 votes.
Musa said the exercise was conducted in line with the Electoral Act and party guidelines, adding that Aliyu-Gusau met all requirements and was duly returned elected.
Aliyu-Gusau, a former deputy governor of Zamfara State and son of former National Security Adviser, Aliyu Mohammed Gusau, will represent the ADC in the 2027 governorship election.

In other results announced on the same day, the party produced its senatorial candidates across Zamfara State.
Shehu Rafi won Zamfara North, Atiku Abubakar-Saleh secured Zamfara West, while Mika’ila Bello clinched Zamfara Central.
For the House of Representatives, Nura Mohammed emerged candidate for Zurmi/Shinkafi, Bashir Abubakar for Kaura Namoda/Birnin Magaji, and Mohammed Mustapha for Bakura/Maradun.
Others are Umar Faru for Gummi/Bukkuyum, Isiaka Ibrahim Anka for Anka/Talata Mafara, and Abubakar Abdullahi for Gusau/Tsafe.
The party did not field a candidate for Maru/Bungudu Federal Constituency after no aspirant obtained the nomination form.
Zamfara ADC Chairman, Shehu Maishanu, described the primaries as peaceful and orderly, urging unity ahead of the 2027 elections.
