Turaki-Led PDP Welcomes Court Decision Clearing Jonathan For 2027 Race

The Kabiru Turaki-led faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has applauded a Federal High Court ruling that dismissed a legal challenge to former President Goodluck Jonathan’s eligibility to contest the 2027 presidential election.

On Tuesday, May 26, Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that the plaintiff, JohnMary Jideobi, had no legal standing to file the case, stating that he failed to demonstrate any direct injury arising from Jonathan’s alleged political intentions.

The court also ordered Jideobi to pay a ₦20 million penalty in favour of the former president.

In reaction to the judgment, PDP faction spokesperson Ini Ememobong said the ruling was consistent with both “law and common sense”, adding that legal provisions cannot be applied retroactively.

He further criticised the case as “vexatious” and a “gross abuse of court processes”, insisting it should not have been brought before the court.

Ememobong also praised the imposition of punitive costs, saying it would serve as a warning against attempts to misuse the judiciary to disrupt democratic processes.

According to him, the decision has effectively cleared the path for Jonathan’s “presidential rescue mission totally unfettered”.

The development comes after the PDP, on May 19, granted a waiver on screening requirements for Jonathan, making him the party’s sole presidential aspirant.

The party is expected to hold its presidential primary on May 28 as preparations continue ahead of the 2027 general election.

Meanwhile, the other PDP faction backed by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike has named Senator Sandy Onor as its consensus presidential candidate.
