Obi Shrugs Off Jonathan Threat, Insists On National Focus

Former Anambra State Governor, Peter Obi, on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, dismissed speculation that former President Goodluck Jonathan could affect his 2027 presidential ambition, saying he remains focused on national issues rather than political rivalry.

Obi spoke after a more-than-two-hour screening exercise at the national secretariat of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Abuja, part of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

Reacting to reports of Jonathan’s possible return to the race on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, Obi said he was not preoccupied with contenders, stressing that democracy allows any qualified citizen to seek office.

“I’m not aware of that. Democracy is about people offering themselves for service and being voted for,” he said. “I am focused on how to build a better Nigeria.”

He said his priorities remain national unity, security, economic recovery and anti-corruption reforms, warning that worsening hardship and insecurity demand urgent attention.

“This is a country where mothers should not fear when their children go to school or work,” he said, adding that Nigerians must be able to move freely without fear.

On the screening exercise, Obi described it as a key test of internal democracy, saying it allowed the party to verify the credentials and competence of aspirants.

He also dismissed claims of a consensus candidacy, insisting the process was still open since nomination forms had only just been released.

Obi arrived at the Abuja secretariat at about 6:45 p.m., dressed in his trademark black kaftan and cap, accompanied by Senator Victor Umeh of Anambra Central.

The screening panel was chaired by former Governor Sam Egwu, with members including Buba Galadima, Ikeddy Isiguzo, Wole Adedayo, Udenta Udenta and Henry Obaze.
