Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has explained the reasons behind the absence of star forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman from Nigeria’s squad for upcoming international friendlies against Poland and Portugal.
The French-Malian tactician disclosed that both players were excused from the squad to focus on their physical condition and club commitments following a demanding season.
According to Chelle, Osimhen was left out amid uncertainty surrounding his future at club level, with the striker currently attracting interest from several European sides.
“Victor Osimhen may have to change clubs, so I prefer that he stays where he is because if you play and you are not at 100 per cent, it is not good,” Chelle said.
The former African Footballer of the Year has been one of Nigeria’s most influential players in recent years and was instrumental in the team’s recent campaigns.
Lookman will also miss the fixtures after being granted a rest period following an exhausting season in Europe.
Chelle revealed that the winger’s club requested that he be released from international duty to recover from fatigue.
“Lookman is very tired, and Athletico Madrid has asked us to release him,” the coach stated.
The absence of the duo represents a significant setback for the Super Eagles, with both players regarded as key attacking weapons in the national team’s setup.
Despite losing two of his biggest stars, Chelle expressed confidence in the squad’s ability to compete against two formidable opponents.
The coach also acknowledged additional challenges affecting preparations, including visa-related issues involving some members of the squad.

However, he insisted that Nigeria would approach both matches with determination and a strong competitive spirit.
“We will go there to fight. If we win, we win. If we lose, we lose. But if we lose, they will have to work for it. They will have to beat us to win those games,” he said.
Chelle described Poland as a quality side preparing for the World Cup and ranked Portugal among the strongest national teams in world football.
The friendlies are expected to provide valuable tests for the Super Eagles as the coaching crew continues rebuilding the team following Nigeria’s failure to secure qualification for the FIFA World Cup.
Reflecting on that disappointment, Chelle admitted missing out on the global showpiece remained painful but believes the upcoming matches could help shape a stronger future for the national team.
“I am sad that we did not go to the World Cup, but maybe this challenge will be something very good for me and for the team,” he added.
