Rivers United Players Sustain Injuries In Road Crash To Awka

Players and officials of Rivers United FC were involved in a road accident on Thursday while traveling to Awka, Anambra State, for their President Federation Cup Round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United FC.

The club confirmed the incident in an official statement issued by its Media Officer, Charles Mayuku.

According to the statement, the accident occurred along the Obiri-Ikwerre Airport Road on the outskirts of Port Harcourt shortly after the team departed from its camp en route to Awka.

The club disclosed that some players and officials sustained minor injuries in the accident but assured supporters that there were no fatalities or life-threatening injuries.

“Thankfully, there have been no fatalities or life-threatening injuries reported. All affected individuals are currently receiving appropriate medical attention and are in stable condition,” the statement read.

Rivers United said the health, safety and well-being of its players and officials remain its top priority, adding that the club’s medical team is closely monitoring those affected.

Management of the club also stated that it is assessing the situation and making necessary arrangements following the incident.

The Port Harcourt-based side expressed appreciation to fans, partners and members of the football community for their concern, prayers and support during the period.

The club added that further information regarding the team’s travel plans and the status of the Federation Cup Round of 16 fixture against Nasarawa United would be communicated in due course.

Rivers United are scheduled to face Nasarawa United in Awka as the battle for a place in the quarter-finals of the President Federation Cup continues.
