The governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kano State, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has selected Hon. Mustapha Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his running mate ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
Mustapha Kwankwaso, eldest son of former Kano State Governor and NDC vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, was formally unveiled on Monday, June 15, 2026, as the party’s deputy governorship candidate.
The declaration came during an NDC caucus meeting hosted by Mustapha at his residence on Miller Road, Kano State, where party leaders, senatorial candidates and stakeholders gathered to finalise preparations for the 2027 general election.
The meeting drew key party figures, including the NDC Kano Central Senatorial candidate, Dr. Gawuna, the NDC Kano South Senatorial candidate, Dr. Bataiya, alongside other candidates and supporters.

Shortly after the announcement, Saifullahi Hassan, spokesperson to Rabiu Kwankwaso, congratulated Mustapha in a post on X, writing:
“Congratulations !!! H.E Mustapha Rabiu Kwankwaso, as NDC Deputy Gubernatorial Candidate.”
Mustapha, a former Kano State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development under Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, brings administrative experience and political exposure to the NDC ticket.
He previously served in the Kano State Executive Council alongside Gwarzo before political realignments within the administration triggered a cabinet shake-up and shifting loyalties across the state’s political bloc.
The development underscores ongoing political realignments in Kano following the split between Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the Kwankwasiyya movement led by Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, a shift that continues to reshape alliances ahead of 2027.
