Kano State has begun screening 1,500 intending couples ahead of its planned mass wedding programme, as authorities set aside about N1.5 billion for the 2026 edition of the exercise.
The screening exercise, being conducted under the supervision of the Kano State Hisbah Board, is part of preparations for the state-sponsored social welfare initiative aimed at supporting low-income residents to formalize marriages.
Participants drawn from across various local government areas are currently undergoing both medical and eligibility assessments as part of the selection process.
The examinations include tests for HIV/AIDS, hepatitis B, genotype compatibility and other basic health checks required under the programme guidelines.

Officials said only applicants who meet the stipulated medical and administrative conditions will be cleared to participate in the mass wedding ceremony.
The initiative, which has been sustained over the years, also provides welfare support to beneficiaries, including household items and start-up assistance to help newlyweds establish their homes.
Authorities confirmed that about N1.5 billion has been earmarked for the 2026 edition of the programme, covering logistics, medical screening, welfare packages and other operational costs.
The mass wedding scheme remains one of Kano State’s key social intervention programmes, designed to ease economic pressure on vulnerable residents while promoting structured family life.
