Nollywood’s ‘Black Market’ Eyes Guinness World Record With 50,000-Person Screening

Nollywood producers behind the upcoming feature film Black Market are aiming to make history with a Guinness World Records (GWR) attempt for the largest film screening ever held at a single venue.

The ambitious event is scheduled for September 26 at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos, where organisers hope to attract 50,000 people, surpassing the current world record of 43,624 attendees set in the Philippines in 2015 during the screening of Felix Manalo.

Black Market is the second feature film from Rixel Studios following the success of Red Circle in 2025. The project is being produced in collaboration with FilmOne Studios, Signet Ring Studios and Switch Visuals Production.

Nora Awolowo, founder of Rixel Studios, said the record attempt reflects the team’s determination to keep pushing creative boundaries in Nollywood.

“We are excited to go on this journey as a team and we have taken a lot of learnings from our previous film. As young filmmakers, one of our aim is to continue to creatively look for ways to innovate,” Awolowo said.

Ladun Awobokun, Chief Content Officer at FilmOne Studios, described the event as an opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s film industry to a global audience.

“We are incredibly excited. This is more than a film project. It’s an opportunity to create history and showcase Nigerian creativity and Nollywood on a global stage,” Awobokun said.

Chief Executive Officer of Switch Visuals Production, Damilola Osikoya, said the initiative highlights the power of collaboration and bold thinking.

“There is nothing more inspiring to me than seeing young people challenge conventions and push the boundaries of innovation.

“This project is especially close to my heart because it represents what is possible when bold ideas meet determination and collaboration,” Osikoya said.

Directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay from a screenplay co-written with Abdul Tijani-Ahmed, Black Market was filmed in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The cast features Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Uzor Arukwe, Omowunmi Dada, Teniola Aladese, Scarlet Gomez, Itele D Icon, Susan Pwajok, Folagade Banks, Tomiwa Tegbe, Andrew Yaw Bunting, Shamz Garuba and Adeoluwa Akintoba.
