Herdsmen Attack Benue Communities, Kill Residents

Suspected armed herders have attacked several communities in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State, leaving some residents dead and others injured.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday across Mbaterem, Ayaba, Ikpur, Yina, Aboajio and Ukpen communities in Mbazun Ward.

Confirming the attack, Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, commended security agencies for their swift intervention and expressed condolences to families who lost their loved ones.

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor said the attackers had invaded the communities and unleashed violence on residents.

Alia assured the people of Benue that his administration would continue to provide the necessary support to security agencies to strengthen the protection of lives and property across the state.

He also warned those allegedly attempting to frustrate the state’s peace efforts, insisting that the attacks would not force residents to abandon their ancestral.

“Benue lands for Benue people. Anyone who thinks attacking us will intimidate us to leave the land is making a mistake,” the governor said.

He added, “I took an oath to protect our people, and I will not relent.”

The governor also acknowledged the support being provided by the Federal Government in the fight against terrorism and other security threats in the state.

Alia urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to security authorities, saying timely information would assist security agencies in preventing further attacks.

He further directed security agencies to maintain a strong presence in strategic locations across the state and intensify efforts to track down what he described as “enemies of the state.”

The latest attack comes amid continued security concerns in Benue, with several communities reportedly coming under attack in recent weeks.

On Thursday night, gunmen abducted 14 passengers travelling in an 18-seater bus along the Ankpechi–Omutele axis of Ohimini Local Government Area. Police later confirmed the rescue of five victims, including a four-year-old boy, while nine others were still being held.

Earlier in July, at least 16 people were reportedly killed in Nobi by suspected armed herders, while another attack on Efeyi community later that month left 15 people dead.

The recurring attacks have heightened concerns over the safety of rural communities in the state, with calls growing for stronger security measures to protect residents and prevent further loss of lives.
