The Abia State government has lifted the suspension on the Lokpanta and Uzuakoli Abattoirs, which had been closed due to unsanitary conditions. Following extensive renovations, these abattoirs are now back in operation.
Okey Kanu, the state’s Commissioner for Information, shared this update on Monday while addressing journalists about the results of this week’s executive council meeting, chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
Kanu also revealed that the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) has launched an extensive waste collection initiative, going door-to-door in Umuahia and Aba, and carrying out street-to-street refuse collection in parts of Abia North.

Meanwhile, Ogbonnaya Okereke, ASEPA’s General Manager, raised concerns about the unsafe practice of using tire flames in meat processing, which has resulted in poor-quality meat being sold to the public. He assured that the government is working on a solution, including a project to convert cow dung into biogas to address the issue.
On a positive note, the Abia State government celebrated the remarkable achievement of Abia Warriors Football Club of Umuahia for securing a spot in the CAF continental tournament next season, calling the feat historic.
In a somber announcement, the government confirmed that the late Commissioner for Labour and Employment, Sunny Onwuma, will be laid to rest on Thursday, the 15th of May, 2025.
