In a poignant ceremony held at Eko Hotel in Lagos, Access Bank commemorated the first anniversary of the tragic passing of its former Group Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Herbert Wigwe, his wife, Chizoba, and their son, Chizi.
The trio lost their lives in a helicopter crash near Nipton, California, on February 9, 2024, an event that sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s business and financial sectors.
In a heartfelt statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the bank reflected on the enduring legacy of the Wigwe family:
“Today marks one year since the world stood still for us. On this day, we lost Herbert, Doreen, and Chizi—three remarkable souls who left an indelible mark on our lives and our hearts.
One year later, we still feel the void, but we also feel the weight of their legacy—one that challenges us to be better, do better, and strive for greatness.
As we reflect, we carry forward the values they instilled and honour their memories by walking the path they paved for us. Forever in our hearts.”
Dr. Wigwe, a visionary leader, co-founded Access Bank in 1989.
Under his stewardship, the bank underwent significant transformations, including the acquisition of Diamond Bank in 2018, which elevated Access Bank to the forefront of Nigeria’s banking industry. His untimely death, alongside his family, was a profound loss to the nation.
