Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, has confirmed that the death toll from Sunday’s flood disaster in Yola has climbed to 23, with several others still unaccounted for.
Fintiri, who landed at Yola International Airport at 1:45 pm on Monday, July 28, went directly to the affected communities in Yola South Local Government Area, where he met with victims and expressed his condolences.
During a visit to a temporary camp at Yelewa Primary School, the governor interacted with displaced families and assured them that the government would not abandon them.
“We will constitute a technical committee to carry out a thorough assessment. Based on their findings, we will take concrete steps to assist affected residents,” Fintiri said.
He added that the committee would be formed in partnership with the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency to evaluate the extent of the destruction.

The governor criticised those exploiting the tragedy to stoke political tensions, warning against misinformation and division.
“This is not a time for politics or finger-pointing. It’s a time for unity and action,” he said while addressing victims in the camp.
Fintiri explained that the flood resulted from heavy rainfall and poor drainage, worsened by blocked water channels caused by residents’ construction practices.
He stressed the need to tackle these issues to prevent future disasters.
The government has pledged to provide immediate relief to ease the suffering of affected families.
