ADC Defends Celebration Of Supreme Court Ruling, Says 2027 Mission Intact

The African Democratic Congress has pushed back against criticism over its celebration of a recent Supreme Court judgment, insisting that the ruling represents a meaningful victory in what it described as a broader political struggle ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement posted on his official X handle on Friday, May 1, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said attempts to downplay the judgment as a “pyrrhic victory” are both misleading and dangerous.

“There has been a deliberate attempt in some quarters to diminish the significance of the recent Supreme Court judgement, framing it as a ‘pyrrhic victory’ or questioning why members of the African Democratic Congress chose to celebrate,” Abdullahi wrote.

“This line of argument is not only misleading, it is dangerous,” he added.

Abdullahi acknowledged that the ADC currently occupies the position of an underdog in Nigeria’s political landscape but stressed that the party is not lacking in experience or resolve.

“Yes, we are the underdog in this moment. But we are not without experience. Within the ADC are battle-tested leaders and resilient members who have navigated difficult political terrains and who understand, clearly, what victory looks like,” he said.

He made it clear that the party’s long-term objective goes beyond the court decision.

“The mission is to ensure that the ADC not only contests, but wins the 2027 elections, and that Nigeria does not slide into a one-party state. That mission remains fully intact,” Abdullahi stated.

Describing the legal victory as part of a larger process, he said, “But wars are not won in a single moment. They are built through a series of battles. Yesterday was one such battle, and it was won.”

“Does this mean the war is over? Absolutely not,” he added, noting that the party has “returned to the trenches” as it continues its political and legal engagements.
