ADC Demands El-Rufai Release Or Immediate Court Arraignment

The African Democratic Congress has urged authorities to either free former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, or bring him before a competent court without delay.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the 18th of March, 2026, by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party cautioned that any disregard for constitutional provisions could weaken democratic principles in the country.

“The African Democratic Congress demands the immediate release of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, or his immediate arraignment in a court of competent jurisdiction. Nothing more. Nothing less,” the party said.

The ADC took a swipe at the administration of Bola Tinubu, arguing that the situation raises concerns about adherence to the rule of law and respect for human rights.

“If this is the democratic character of a government that is seeking another mandate from the Nigerian people, then Nigerians must ask themselves, what becomes of the rule of law and human rights when the Tinubu government no longer needs their votes?”

The party described the development as troubling, warning that it reflects poorly on the country’s democratic values and signals a drift toward impunity.

“Freedom is not a privilege that is granted at the pleasure of the executive branch. It is a right that is guaranteed by the Constitution,” it said.

ADC also called on the President to clearly show his commitment to constitutional governance, stressing that actions must align with democratic principles.

“If President Tinubu intends to govern as though the Constitution is optional, then he owes Nigerians the honesty to say so openly.

“But if President Tinubu still claims allegiance to the rule of law, then we challenge him to prove it in action,” the statement added.

The party further insisted that key officials, including National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, alongside the leadership of the ICPC and other involved agencies, must act strictly within the bounds of the law.
