The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has condemned plans by Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s administration to release 70 suspected bandits in custody, describing the move as dangerous, unjust, and a betrayal of victims of banditry across Katsina State.
The party announced its position on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, during a press briefing in Katsina.
Speaking at the briefing, ADC spokesperson Lawal Tukur-Batagarawa said the proposed release would undermine public confidence in the government’s fight against insecurity, demoralise security operatives, and embolden criminal elements terrorising rural communities.
“Freeing suspects while communities continue to suffer attacks rewards violence and disregards the sacrifices of officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty,” he said.
“It is totally unacceptable and irresponsible for any government to contemplate releasing suspected criminals when many victims are yet to receive justice.”
The condemnation followed a letter from the Katsina State Ministry of Justice, dated Thursday, January 2, 2026, indicating that the government had initiated legal steps to secure the release through the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee.
The state government has defended the move, saying it is intended to consolidate peace agreements with armed groups and facilitate the release of abducted persons.

ADC warned that the plan could weaken the rule of law and further expose residents to insecurity if not executed transparently.
The party urged the government to prioritise justice for victims and adopt security strategies that safeguard public safety.
At the briefing, ADC also announced the inauguration of its Katsina State leadership, headed by Ahmed Aliyu-Yar’Adua, and the formation of a membership mobilisation, registration, and revalidation committee chaired by Dr. Mustapha Mohammed Inuwa.
The proposed release has sparked public debate, with growing concerns over its potential impact on security in Katsina State and the wider North-West region.
