Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has alleged that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is planning to freeze the accounts of the state government and key officials ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The allegation was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, who said the governor received what he described as credible intelligence on the purported move.
According to the statement, Adeleke warned that freezing the state’s accounts would cripple government operations at a critical period and questioned the legality of such an action.
He described the reported plan as an abuse of power, insisting that the anti-graft agency has no legal authority to freeze the accounts of a state government.
“The proposed action, if carried out, would amount to a deliberate attempt to paralyse governance and disrupt essential public services ahead of the governorship election,” the statement said.

The governor further maintained that there was no legal justification for the alleged move and urged relevant authorities to ensure due process and the rule of law were upheld.
The allegation comes as political activities intensify ahead of the August 15 governorship election, where Adeleke, the Accord Party candidate, is seeking a second term against the All Progressives Congress (APC) flag bearer, Bola Oyebamiji.
Adeleke has, in recent weeks, repeatedly accused unnamed political actors of attempting to frustrate his administration before the election.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not issued an official response to the allegations.
