AFCON Final: Morocco Seeks Two-Year Jail For 18 Senegalese Fans

Moroccan authorities have charged 18 Senegalese football supporters with hooliganism following disturbances at the AFCON 2025 final in Rabat.

Prosecutors are seeking prison sentences of up to two years for the fans over incidents during the match in which Senegal defeated Morocco 1‑0 after extra time on Sunday, January 18, 2026.

The supporters were arrested after clashes and attempts by some fans to enter the pitch following a controversial penalty decision.

Their trial began on Thursday, February 19, 2026, at the Rabat First Instance Court.

The defendants have been in pre-trial detention since the day of the match and face charges including public disorder, violence against security forces, and property damage.

Defense lawyers noted that language barriers and misunderstandings may have affected the fans’ understanding of the charges, while prosecutors maintained that evidence, including stadium camera footage, clearly documents the alleged misconduct.

The Senegalese Football Federation and national authorities have pledged support for the detained fans, emphasizing that diplomatic and legal channels are engaged to ensure their rights are protected.

The case has drawn widespread attention, highlighting concerns over fan conduct at sporting events and the handling of international supporters following one of Africa’s most closely contested football finals.
