Again Sowore Alleges Wike Diverted $300m Ogoni Funds to Supermarkets

Human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, has levelled fresh allegations against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, accusing him of diverting funds meant for Ogoniland’s environmental remediation.

In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Friday, Sowore alleged that Wike, a former Governor of Rivers State, diverted $300 million earmarked for the cleanup of Ogoniland into constructing a chain of retail outlets in Port Harcourt known as HyperCity Supermarkets.

“The revelation is that thieving Nyesom Ezenwo Wike diverted $300 million earmarked for Ogoniland’s remediation and development,” Sowore wrote.
“Reports indicate that Wike funneled the funds into constructing a chain of supermarkets in Port Harcourt, known as ‘HyperCity Supermarkets’.”

According to Sowore, the allegation was recently brought before President Bola Tinubu by an Ogoni delegation during a visit to Aso Rock Villa.

“This revelation, which is being hushed, had an honorable mention in a document presented by an Ogoni delegation to President Bola Tinubu the day before yesterday,” he added.

The activist vowed to continue pressing for accountability, insisting that Wike must face justice for what he described as unprecedented looting and abuse of public trust.

The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), established in 2016 following recommendations from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is the federal initiative tasked with cleaning up oil-polluted Ogoniland.

The project has been plagued by funding controversies and allegations of mismanagement over the years.

Just days ago, Sowore also alleged that Wike owns a luxury hotel in Port Harcourt, which he claimed was built with stolen government funds.

His latest revelation now adds to a string of accusations against the minister, who is also facing scrutiny over alleged hidden assets abroad.

SaharaReporters recently reported that Sowore, through his lawyer Deji Adeyanju, petitioned the Attorney General of Florida, Ashley Moody, calling for the forfeiture and prosecution of Wike over what he described as “illicit property acquisitions.”

The petition, dated September 22, 2025, accused Wike and his wife, Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom-Wike of the Court of Appeal, of secretly acquiring three lakeside properties in Winter Springs, Florida, worth over $6 million.

The properties were later transferred to their children — Jordan, Joaquin, and Jazmyne Wike — through quit claim deeds executed between 2021 and 2023.

Sowore also alleged that beyond the U.S. transactions, the FCT Minister has been involved in large-scale land allocations in Abuja, transferring over 3,800 hectares valued at $6.45 billion to his children through shell companies and proxies.

President Bola Tinubu appointed Wike as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory in August 2023.
