Airtel Suspends Airtime, Data Credit Services Amid Regulatory Adjustments

Telecommunications provider Airtel Nigeria has announced the temporary suspension of its airtime and data credit services, a feature that previously allowed prepaid subscribers to borrow and repay on their next recharge.

The development was disclosed in a statement released on Friday by the company’s Director of Corporate Communications and CSR, Femi Adeniran, who explained that the move is part of efforts to align operations with evolving regulatory and operational requirements within Nigeria’s telecom sector.

Despite the suspension, the company reassured customers that regular airtime and data purchase options remain fully available and unaffected.

It added that the pause in credit services would not impact overall network performance or service delivery nationwide.

Commenting on the decision, Airtel Nigeria’s Director of Marketing, Ismail Adeshina, described the step as both necessary and responsible in the current regulatory climate.

“This is a necessary move as we continue to ensure compliance, transparency, and consumer protection, while still driving innovation within Nigeria’s digital space,” he stated.

The telecom operator noted that customers would be informed once there are updates regarding the reinstatement of the service.

The suspension comes amid increased regulatory scrutiny surrounding digital lending and credit-based services in the telecommunications industry, with operators adjusting their offerings to meet new compliance standards.
