Prominent activist, Aisha Yesufu, has resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), while also declaring her intention to contest the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat in the 2027 general elections.
She announced the development in a statement posted on her verified X handle on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, saying her decision was driven by a deeper understanding of Nigeria’s political direction and her continued alignment with the political vision associated with former presidential candidate, Peter Obi.
Yesufu said her initial support for Obi informed her earlier move to the ADC, adding that her defection to the NDC was part of a continued commitment to that political position.
“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she wrote.
She maintained that her political choices were guided by consistency and personal conviction.

“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honor the promise I am joining the NDC,” she added.
Yesufu confirmed she would contest the FCT senatorial seat under the NDC platform.
“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she stated.
She said she had completed her roles within the ADC and ensured a smooth transition, while expressing appreciation to members of the party. According to her, her experience in the party was valuable, having served in several committee positions.
“I was fortunate to work with great and amazing people whose goal was a better country. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair, and secretary at various levels,” she said.
Her defection comes amid widening political realignments within Nigeria’s opposition space involving emerging alignments around the NDC.
