Chief Judge of Akwa Ibom State, Justice Ekaete Fabian-Obot, has called on journalists to maintain high standards of professionalism in their work, emphasizing the importance of respecting human dignity and rights at all times.
Justice Obot highlighted the need for reporters to verify facts, listen to all perspectives, and exercise patience when reaching parties involved in a story. She stressed that these practices are vital for credible journalism.
The Chief Judge made these remarks on Monday, the 2nd of February, 2026, during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, at her chambers.
She urged journalists to resist compromises, reminding them that they are “the image and conscience of society.”
Warning against defamatory reporting, Justice Obot noted that inaccurate or harmful reports could erode public confidence, tarnish reputations, and weaken trust in institutions.
She said, “I am delighted to receive this delegation today. I encourage you to remain true to the teachings and etiquettes of your profession, because professionalism is the hallmark of an excellent practitioner. The dignity of an individual must never be compromised or traded for any reason, regardless of the circumstances.”

In his remarks, NUJ State Chairman Nsibiet John praised the Chief Judge for her motherly approach and impactful leadership since assuming office. He described her tenure as reform-driven, citing achievements such as infrastructural improvements, faster dispensation of justice, enhanced decency within the judiciary, and better welfare for judicial staff.
The chairman further encouraged closer collaboration between the media and the judiciary through regular engagements, stressing that such partnerships would contribute to a more progressive society.
He also appealed for the initiation of capacity-building programs for journalists who cover judiciary and crime reporting, to strengthen reporting quality and accuracy.
