Gladness Gideon
As final preparations intensified for the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, prominent political figures began arriving in Daura on Tuesday to pay their last respects.
Among the early dignitaries at the late president’s residence were former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, and former Borno State governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.
Amaechi, who holds the traditional title of Dan Amanar Daura—meaning Trusted Son of Daura—wore the full ceremonial regalia associated with the title, in a symbolic and solemn tribute to the late statesman. The title was conferred on him by the Daura Emirate in 2022 in recognition of his contributions to national development and his close ties with the region.
Senator Sheriff, a senior chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), joined other sympathisers and members of the Buhari family in offering condolences and awaiting the arrival of the former president’s remains from London.

Buhari died on Sunday at the age of 82 in a London hospital after a period of illness. His body is expected to arrive in Daura aboard a Nigerian Air Force aircraft ahead of burial rites scheduled for later today in accordance with Islamic tradition.
The late president, who led Nigeria as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985 and as a democratically elected leader from 2015 to 2023, has been remembered across the nation and beyond for his austere style of leadership and enduring influence on Nigeria’s political evolution.
