Anambra Police Tighten Checkpoint Monitoring Over Extortion

The Anambra State Police Command has introduced a new monitoring system to keep closer watch on checkpoints, patrol teams and other police operations across the state.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, ordered the measure following concerns raised by residents and stakeholders during his recent security engagement sessions across the state’s three senatorial districts.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday, saying the initiative was designed to improve accountability, professionalism and effective policing.

Under the new arrangement, the command’s operational control rooms will monitor patrol formations and checkpoints more closely, while Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers and Tactical Team Commanders will be held responsible for the conduct of personnel under their supervision.

Ikenga said complaints involving extortion, harassment and other forms of misconduct would be received and monitored through the control rooms and escalated for appropriate action.

The Commissioner warned police officers against abusing their positions or exploiting members of the public.

According to the statement, Ama said the command remained committed to protecting lives and property across Anambra but would not tolerate any officer using police authority to intimidate or extort residents.

He consequently directed senior operational commanders to ensure strict compliance with the new directive.

The CP also warned that personnel found guilty of extortion or other forms of unprofessional conduct would face disciplinary action in line with police regulations and the law.

The command urged residents and visitors to report incidents involving police misconduct through its designated communication channels.

Members of the public can contact the Operational Control Room on 07039194332, the Police Public Relations Officer on 08039334002, or send complaints through the Commissioner of Police’s dedicated WhatsApp line on 09169531886.

The command said credible complaints would be promptly investigated and appropriate action taken.

It further reiterated its commitment to professional, people-centred and accountable policing, stressing that cooperation from residents would be crucial to improving security and police-community relations in the state.
