Unknown gunmen, on Wednesday, shot at the convoy of the Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, at Baga, a town near the state capital, Maiduguri. The incident created panic and fears among the people of the state as the whereabouts of the governor remains unknown as of 9:40pm on Wednesday.
It was learnt that the incident occurred while Governor Zulum was on his way to some camps of some internally displaced persons in the northern part of Borno.
“The governor went to Kukawa, and on his way to Baga his convoy was attacked. Nobody was injured,” a security source said.
It could, however, not be confirmed if the attack on the governor was carried out by Boko Haram insurgents.
Governor Zulum, it was gathered, had yet to return to Maiduguri, the state capital, as of 9:40pm on Wednesday, fueling speculations that all might not be well with him and members of his entourage.
But one of his aides, Mohammed Mai Bukar, assured the peole of the state that the governor was safe.
Bukar wrote in a Facebook post, “To Our Concerned citizens, H.E Prof.Zulum and His Entourage are all fine and there was (were) no casualties. Thanks!”
This is the second time in one year that such an attack would launched Zulum’s convoy.
Last year, his convoy was attacked at Konduga while returning from a trip to Bama Local Government Area.
That attack took place seven months after Boko Haram insurgents attacked the convoy of Zulum’s predecessor, Kashim Shettima, who was on his way to the Gamboru Ngala area of the state.
No fewer than 60 persons were reportedly killed in the incident and over 100 others kidnapped.
