EFCC probe: IGP recalls police officers loyal to Magu

Inspector-General of police, Mohammed Adamu, has withdrawn some police officers attached to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

No fewer than 20 zonal and sectional heads at the EFCC, who are key police officers, it was learnt, were affected by the IGP’s recall order.

The recalled policemen, it was gathered, have been ordered to report to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where they are expected to be redeployed and given new assignments.

It was further learnt that though the affected police officers had spent a number of years at the EFCC, the police boss’ action was aimed at ridding the anti-graft agency of those said to be “too close” to suspended acting Chairman, Ibrahim Magu.

Recall that shortly after Magu’s arrest and subsequent probe began, the IGP had ordered the withdrawal of policemen attached to the embattled EFCC boss.

The Presidency has also suspended indefinitely 12 directors at the anti-graft agency.

Some of them were said to have taken part in the investigation of corruption allegations against the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, whose petition to the President led to Magu’s arrest and ongoing probe.

EFCC Secretary, Olanipekun Olukoyede, who is not a police officer, has also been sent on indefinite suspension.

The agency’s Director of Operations, Mohammed Umar, was subsequently appointed by the President as its acting chairman in Magu’s stead.
