APC Moves to Consensus-Based Leadership Selection Ahead of 2026 Convention

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has confirmed plans to adopt a consensus approach in selecting its national leadership at its upcoming national convention scheduled for March 27–28, 2026, in Abuja.

The party disclosed that the decision is part of efforts to streamline internal processes and promote unity ahead of the crucial convention, which is expected to shape its leadership structure going forward.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Wednesday, the Assistant Secretary for Media and Publicity for the APC National Convention 2026, Mary Ikoku, said the consensus model has been adopted for the selection of key national officers.

However, she noted that the party has not yet finalized its approach for elective positions during party primaries, stressing that such decisions often depend on local political dynamics across different regions.

“APC, for this convention, is adopting consensus. As to whether that applies to elective positions, I cannot say for certain, because politics is local,” Ikoku said.

She explained that while consensus may be suitable for certain positions, it may not be universally applicable, as political realities vary across constituencies.

Ikoku also addressed provisions of the Electoral Act, noting that political parties are expected to comply with regulations governing internal democracy, including the use of direct or consensus methods in candidate selection.

According to her, the current legal framework allows parties to choose between direct primaries and consensus arrangements, while indirect primaries have been excluded.

She argued that adherence to these provisions reflects a party’s level of preparedness.

“We have an electoral law that defines the models for elections. Any party that is prepared should not wait until election season before organizing its structures,” she said, adding that early planning is essential to avoid internal challenges.

Ahead of the convention, the APC has already begun screening aspirants for positions within its National Working Committee (NWC).

Among those seeking leadership roles are Nentawe Yilwatda, who is vying for National Chairman, and Ajibola Basiru, a contender for National Secretary.

Other party officials seeking to retain their positions include Dayo Israel (National Youth Leader), Ali Bukar Dalori (Deputy National Chairman, North), Abdulkarim Abubakar Kana (National Legal Adviser), Mary Alile Idele (National Woman Leader), and Felix Morka (National Publicity Secretary), among others.

The convention is expected to be a key moment for the APC as it seeks to consolidate internal unity and strengthen its organizational structure ahead of future elections.
