Army Arrests Suspected Kidnapper, Recovers AK-47 In Edo

Troops of the 4 Brigade Nigerian Army, operating under Operation WABAIZIGAN, have arrested a suspected kidnapper and recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition along the Benin-Sapele Road in Edo State.

The suspect, identified as Olamide Oyeniyi, was apprehended on September 12, 2026, at Obaretin Community in Ikpoba-Okha Local Government Area during a targeted operation aimed at disrupting criminal activities along the major transportation corridor.

The development was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday by the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 4 Brigade Nigerian Army, Benin, Kennedy Anyanwu.

Anyanwu said troops recovered one AK-47 rifle, one magazine and eight rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition from the suspect.

Other items recovered included a Tecno mobile phone, two bags, a torchlight, a music box and assorted charms.

The Army spokesperson said the suspect and the recovered items remained in military custody as investigations continued.

He added that efforts were underway to determine Oyeniyi’s links with other criminal elements and establish his possible involvement in kidnapping and related activities along the Benin-Sapele corridor.

The Nigerian Army said it remained committed to denying criminal elements freedom of action and protecting communities and critical transportation routes across Edo State.

According to the statement, the military would also sustain collaboration with other security agencies to strengthen security operations and improve safety across the state.
