Army Dismisses Alleged Mutiny Threat As False, Urges Public To Rely On Official Sources

The Nigerian Army has dismissed reports alleging threats of mutiny by soldiers over salaries and allowances, describing the claims as false, misleading, and deliberately sensational.

In a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday, the Army said the online publication, which claimed soldiers were threatening mutiny due to welfare concerns, was aimed at undermining public confidence and national security. The statement was signed by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele.

“At no time has there been any threat of mutiny within the Nigerian Army. Mutiny is a grave offence under military law and alien to the ethos, discipline, and professionalism of Nigerian Army personnel, who remain loyal to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces,” the Army said.

The statement added that the report relied on unverifiable claims circulated through unofficial channels and did not reflect the views or conduct of officers and soldiers. It stressed that military personnel are trained to channel grievances through established internal procedures rather than public platforms.

Clarifying issues around remuneration, the Army explained that promotion increments are only one component of military pay, which also includes consolidated salaries, rank-based allowances, operational allowances, field and hardship allowances, and other entitlements that vary by deployment, qualifications, and responsibilities.

The Army also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve troop welfare, including periodic salary reviews, enhanced operational allowances, improved accommodation, medical care, and insurance packages for troops and their families. It noted that the Chief of Army Staff had initiated positive engagements with relevant authorities on troop welfare since assuming office, yielding “progressive outcomes.”

The statement further rejected claims of neglect, saying the Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has consistently demonstrated commitment to the welfare and operational effectiveness of the Armed Forces.

“The Nigerian Army remains a cohesive, disciplined, and professional force, fully focused on its constitutional mandate of defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and supporting internal security operations. The public is urged to disregard such unfounded reports and rely on official communication channels for accurate information concerning the Armed Forces, especially the Nigerian Army,” the statement concluded.
