ASUU Sets Four-Day Deadline Over Lecturers’ Salaries

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has given the Federal Government four days to begin paying lecturers under the newly approved salary structure.

ASUU President, Christopher Piwuna, announced the deadline on Thursday, the 26th of March l, 2026, during a public lecture at Sa’adu Zungur University, Yuli Campus, Bauchi State, stating that the countdown takes effect immediately.

“We have issued a four-day ultimatum from today to the Federal Government to begin the payment of the newly approved salary structure. Failure to comply will attract a strong response from the union,” he said.

Piwuna said the demand is aimed at improving lecturers’ welfare and addressing long-standing concerns over poor remuneration, which he linked to brain drain and declining standards in higher education.

He also noted that past agreements between the union and the government have often not been fully carried out, leading to repeated disputes and industrial actions.

There are concerns that the latest ultimatum could heighten tensions between both sides, with the possibility of a strike if the demands are not met within the timeframe.

ASUU has previously embarked on nationwide strikes to press its demands, actions that have disrupted academic activities in public universities and affected millions of students.
