Atiku Welcomes Obi to ADC, Says Move Will Strengthen Opposition

Former PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has welcomed Peter Obi’s formal entry into the African Democratic Congress (ADC), describing it as a major boost for Nigeria’s growing opposition coalition.

Obi, a former Labour Party presidential candidate and ex‑Anambra governor, officially joined the ADC on Wednesday at the Nike Lake Resort in Enugu.

At the gathering, he urged Nigerians and opposition forces to unite behind a broad coalition to “rescue Nigeria from poverty, disunity and democratic decline,” while accusing the current leadership of state capture, poor economic management and weakening democratic institutions.

In a post on his verified X account on Wednesday, December 30, Atiku said Obi’s declaration marks a turning point for coalition politics and signals a more organised opposition effort ahead of future elections.

“Today marks a significant moment in the history of political coalitions in our country, with the official declaration of my brother and associate, Peter Obi, into the African Democratic Congress,” Atiku said.

He expressed confidence that Obi’s move would deepen cooperation among opposition leaders and help build a more effective alternative to the ruling party.

“It is my pleasure to welcome him officially, as we look forward to a robust working relationship that will foster a virile opposition, one that will ultimately form a government capable of bringing prosperity and peace to our people,” he added.

Atiku also referenced the coalition’s launch, saying he hopes Obi’s decision will encourage more Nigerians and political actors to embrace the ADC coalition’s agenda.
