Badagry Local Government in Lagos State has announced a seven-day mourning period following the death of the Akran of Badagry, Aholu Menu Toyi I, who died on Monday.
The chairman of the council, Mr. Babatunde Hunpe, made the announcement in a statement released on Tuesday, January 13, through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Kriko Augustine.
Hunpe said the decision was taken with the approval of Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu.
“With the approval of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State, I officially announce with profound sorrow the passing of His Royal Majesty, De Wheno Aholu Menu Toyi I, the Akran of Badagry Kingdom.
“Akran peacefully joined his ancestors on Monday, Jan. 12, after a long, illustrious, dignified, and impactful reign devoted to peace, unity, and the preservation of Badagry’s rich and enduring cultural heritage,” he said.

Hunpe described the late monarch as a symbol of continuity and tradition, noting his role as a respected leader and cultural custodian in Badagry.
“In solemn recognition of the life, service, and enduring legacy of our revered monarch and paramount ruler, I hereby declare seven (7) days of mourning, during which the people of Badagry are enjoined to reflect on his selfless leadership, timeless values, and lifelong devotion to Badagry Local Government, Lagos State, and Nigeria at large,” Hunpe added.
He extended condolences to the Council of Obas and Chiefs in Badagry and Lagos State, the royal family, and residents of the local government.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Governor Sanwo-Olu also expressed sorrow over the monarch’s death.
Sanwo-Olu, through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, said the monarch’s passing is a painful loss to Badagry, Lagos State and Nigeria, describing it as the end of an era marked by wisdom, cultural preservation and commitment to development.
Menu-Toyi became Akran on April 23, 1977, and until his death served as Permanent Vice-Chairman of the Lagos State Council of Obas and Chiefs. He spent nearly 49 years on the throne.
