The Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF) has expressed deep concern over the escalating political crisis in Rivers State, warning that the situation could threaten peace, stability and governance in the state and the wider Niger Delta region.
In a statement issued by its leadership, the apex socio-political organisation of the South-South said it was disturbed by the decision of the Rivers State House of Assembly to commence impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, describing the development as one that requires urgent intervention to prevent further deterioration of law and order.
PANDEF noted that Rivers State occupies a strategic position in the Niger Delta and Nigeria’s socio-economic architecture, stressing that prolonged political instability in the state could have far-reaching consequences for the region and the country at large.
Calling for calm, the group urged all parties involved in the political dispute to exercise restraint and embrace dialogue, tolerance and mutual understanding. It appealed to political actors to prioritise peace, good governance, development and the welfare of the people of Rivers State, as well as the interests of other residents, including expatriates living in the state.
Reaffirming its non-partisan stance and role as a unifying platform for the South-South, PANDEF commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC), elders of Rivers State and other stakeholders for their efforts so far in promoting peace and stability.
As part of steps to de-escalate the crisis, PANDEF announced the constitution of a high-level reconciliation committee made up of eminent Nigerians to intervene and facilitate a peaceful resolution.
