Bandits Kill 18 In Zamfara Village As Gov Lawal Mourns

At least 18 people have been killed in Zamfara State after armed bandits attacked Bunkasau village in Bukkuyum Local Government Area on Friday night.

Residents of the community said over 80 attackers arrived on motorcycles around 9 p.m., firing indiscriminately at villagers in Zarummai ward.

Mahmud Dantawasa, the state Commissioner for Information and Culture, confirmed the death toll in a telephone conversation and said several others were injured in the assault.

Governor Dauda Lawal condemned the attack, describing it as a senseless act of violence against defenseless citizens. He also mentioned similar recent attacks on Yar Galma and Dogon Daji communities.

The governor sent condolences to families of the victims and ordered the immediate deployment of a delegation headed by the Deputy Governor to offer assistance and arrange medical care for those wounded.

The attack follows another assault on Kurfa community in the same local government area on April 2, 2026, where armed bandits abducted several residents.

The Divisional Police Officer in Bukkuyum said the assailants, heavily armed and in large numbers, invaded Kurfa around 1:28 p.m., shooting randomly and forcing many to flee.

An unknown number of people were taken away to undisclosed locations, while others managed to escape into surrounding areas.
