Bashir Ahmad Denies Christian Persecution, Says North Lives in Harmony

Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has rejected claims that Christians face persecution in northern Nigeria, insisting that believers of all faiths coexist peacefully across the region. Ahmad made the remarks on Wednesday in a post shared on his X handle, where he described such allegations as “propaganda” driven by misinformation.

According to him, Christians “live freely and happily in every part of the North,” a reality he said counters narratives portraying the region as hostile to non-Muslims. He stressed that northern communities—regardless of religion—share longstanding social ties, cultural bonds, and daily interactions that reinforce unity.

Ahmad acknowledged, however, that the North, like other parts of the country, continues to battle insecurity. He said terrorism and banditry remain the true enemies of all residents, noting that violent attacks do not discriminate based on faith.

“When those criminals strike, we all suffer equally,” he wrote, adding that the shared experience of loss and hardship underscores the need for collective resilience and cooperation.

His comments have stirred debate online, with some users supporting his perspective and others arguing that the situation varies across communities. Ahmad maintained that fostering harmony, rather than amplifying division, is essential to confronting insecurity and strengthening national cohesion.
