Bashir Ahmad Warns Against Politicising Critical Issues in Northern Nigeria

Former presidential aide, Bashir Ahmad, has cautioned against what he described as the deepening culture of politicising critical public issues in Northern Nigeria, warning that the trend is stalling development and worsening long-standing challenges in the region.

In a statement shared on his X account on Monday, Ahmad lamented that nearly every major concern in the North — from security and education to development and essential public services — is routinely reduced to partisan arguments and political alignments.

According to him, this approach has made it difficult to address urgent problems with the seriousness and objectivity they demand. He argued that when issues of public interest are viewed primarily through political lenses, meaningful solutions become harder to achieve.

“One of our biggest problems in the North is our tendency to politicise virtually everything,” Ahmad said, stressing that such attitudes have continued to hinder progress and weaken collective responsibility.

He noted that genuine development would remain elusive unless leaders and citizens alike learn to separate politics from critical matters affecting daily life, particularly those tied to safety, education and economic growth.

Ahmad urged stakeholders across the region to prioritise collective well-being over political sentiments, adding that sustainable progress can only be achieved through unity, sincerity and a shared commitment to the public good.

His remarks have sparked renewed conversation on social media about governance, accountability and the role of political culture in shaping the future of Northern Nigeria.
