Bayelsa Commissioner Resigns, Joins NDC

The Commissioner for Special Duties in the cabinet of Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, Hon. Micheal Magbisa, has resigned his appointment.

Magbisa, a former Chairman of Sagbama Local Government Area and a political ally of former Governor, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, conveyed his decision in a letter dated April 8, 2026, and addressed to the governor.

In the letter, he described the move as difficult but necessary and expressed gratitude to Governor Diri for the opportunity to serve the state, while reaffirming his commitment to the peace, unity, and progress of Bayelsa State.

Part of the letter reads: “I write to formally tender my resignation as the Honourable Commissioner for Special Duties (Bayelsa West) in Bayelsa State.

“It has been a profound honour and privilege to serve in your administration and to contribute to the collective vision of building a stronger, more progressive, and inclusive state. I remain deeply grateful for the opportunity to work alongside a team committed to public service and development.

“However, after careful reflection and wide consultation with my constituents and political associates, I have come to a difficult but necessary decision to step aside from my current role. This decision is guided by my evolving political convictions and my desire to pursue a path that I believe will better serve the interests and aspirations of the people I represent.”

Magbisa had recently raised concerns over the withholding of his March salary, though he later confirmed that the issue had been resolved after receiving payment.

His resignation follows closely after his exit from the All Progressives Congress (APC), a move widely interpreted as a precursor to his alignment with the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), founded by his political mentor, Senator Dickson.
