Bayelsa NDC Grassroots Mobiliser Resigns Weeks After Defecting From APC

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, a grassroots mobiliser of the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in Bayelsa State, Sunday Ebitare Thompson, has resigned from the party.

Thompson’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated June 27, 2026, and addressed to the Chairman of the NDC in Ward 13, Shagbama Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.

His decision comes barely weeks after he defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the NDC alongside his supporters on May 17, 2026, in what was then seen as a boost for the party’s grassroots structure in the state.

Although Thompson did not disclose the reason for his resignation, the development comes amid reports of internal disagreements following the party’s primary elections, fuelling speculation that the crisis may have influenced his decision to quit.

In the resignation letter obtained by Daily Post, Thompson formally announced his exit from the party.

“I hereby formally resign and withdraw my membership from the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC), effective immediately.

“I appreciate the opportunity to have been a part of the party and wish the     NDC success in its future endeavours.”

Thompson’s resignation adds to growing concerns over internal disputes within the NDC ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The development comes less than two months after he and several supporters left the APC for the NDC, a move that was widely viewed as strengthening the opposition party’s grassroots presence in Bayelsa State.

As of the time of filing this report, the Bayelsa State chapter of the NDC had not issued an official statement on the resignation, while the former mobiliser also did not publicly elaborate on the circumstances surrounding his decision.
