The Benue State Police Command has neutralised 12 bandits in a fierce gun battle in Buruku Local Government Area (LGA) as part of an ongoing offensive against criminal elements in the state. However, the operation also resulted in the tragic loss of a police officer, Inspector Terfa Anyiatse.
Police Counter Bandit Ambush in Buruku
According to the command’s spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Sewuese Anene, the Commissioner of Police, Steve Yabanet, had earlier directed tactical teams and divisional police officers to intensify security operations following intelligence reports of regrouping criminal gangs.
Acting on this directive, the Operation Zenda Joint Taskforce launched a series of raids. On March 19, officers heading towards a criminal hideout in Agwabi, Tombo Ward, Buruku LGA, were ambushed by heavily armed bandits. The police swiftly countered with superior firepower, subduing the attackers.
“At the end of the crossfire, 12 bandits were neutralised, while others managed to escape with gunshot wounds,” Anene said.
“The bandits were later taken to a hospital, where they were confirmed dead, and their bodies were deposited at the mortuary.”
Weapons and Items Recovered
Security operatives recovered several items from the criminals, including Three AK-47 rifles, Six rounds of live ammunition, Camouflage uniforms,Assorted charms.

Unfortunately, Inspector Anyiatse, who was wounded in the exchange of fire, succumbed to his injuries and was confirmed dead by medical personnel. His remains have been deposited at the morgue.
Police Intensify Statewide Crackdown on Criminals
The Commissioner of Police, Steve Yabanet, extended his condolences to the family of the fallen officer and praised the bravery of the operatives.
“We deeply mourn the loss of Inspector Terfa Anyiatse, who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. His sacrifice will not be forgotten,” Yabanet said.
He further assured the public of sustained efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.
Meanwhile, separate operations conducted around Daudu and Makurdi led to the recovery of seven locally made pistols and the arrest of five suspected robbers and 32 suspected cultists.

The police command has urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security agencies, as efforts to restore peace and security in Benue State continue.
