The Joint Action Committee of the Non-Academic Staff Union of Associated and Educational Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities at Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi, has declared an indefinite strike over the non-payment of welfare arrears to its members.
The unions said the decision was prompted by what they described as “protracted and unjustifiable delays” in the release of welfare packages, which have left many of their members facing serious financial difficulties.
The strike was announced on Tuesday, the 2nd of September, 2025, after an emergency congress where the unions accused the university management of failing to implement the new national minimum wage, the 25/35 per cent salary increment, and the payment of arrears owed to workers. They also demanded the implementation of promotion benefits for staff promoted between 2022 and 2024, settlement of gratuities, regular pension payments with arrears, and the restoration of monthly remittances into the Contributory Pension Scheme.
Chairman of JAC-MOAUM, Comrade Shishi Luper, who presided over the congress, explained that the action followed the expiration of three separate ultimatums issued to the management. “The goodwill of the congress to sustain industrial harmony has been stretched despite the untold hardship suffered by members due to non-fulfilment of staff welfare demands,” he said.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Ubwa, and the Registrar, Mr. Barnabas Hemba, were present at the meeting to appeal for more time. Ubwa reportedly requested an extension until the end of September to address the issues, but when the matter was put to a vote, the majority of members opted to begin the strike immediately.
Following the declaration, JAC directed all its members to withdraw their services and stay away from work until their demands are fully met.
