‘Buhari Is Dead, He Left Behind a Terrible Legacy’ — Sowore

Omoyele Sowore, human rights activist and 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has issued a scathing reaction to the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away earlier today in a London clinic.

Reacting via his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, Sowore did not mince words, describing Buhari’s legacy as a “terrible one” and calling attention to what he termed decades of authoritarian rule and failed leadership.

According to unconfirmed sources, the late former president reportedly died from complications related to blood cancer (leukemia), though an official medical report is yet to be released.

Sowore stated, “BREAKING: Buhari is dead. He left behind a terrible legacy.”

He further referred to Buhari’s time in power — both as military ruler from 1984 to 1985 and as elected president from 2015 to 2023 — as marred by repression, economic hardship, insecurity, and religious bias.

Buhari, who died at the age of 82, served two terms as Nigeria’s civilian president and was widely known for his anti-corruption rhetoric and military-style governance. However, critics like Sowore have long accused him of overseeing human rights abuses, shrinking civic space, and failing to secure the nation.

Sowore’s sharp critique comes amid a flurry of tributes and reactions from across Nigeria and the international community. While many have praised Buhari’s patriotism and service, others, like Sowore, remain critical of his leadership record.

The Federal Government has declared seven days of national mourning, with flags flying at half-staff and full state honours planned. Vice President Kashim Shettima is currently en route to the UK to accompany the late president’s remains back to Nigeria.
